Alma Discovery: Primo VE

Authentication

You do not need to login to use Primo VE. When a patron is on campus within your database IP ranges, they will be able to get to all the content that they need without logging in. However, there are several reasons to encourage patron login:

  • Provides access to My Library Card, which shows Alma loans, saved result lists, search alerts, etc.
  • Displays borrowing information for the patron's user group on locally held content (loan periods, renewal information, etc.)
  • Shows request links for Resource Sharing or General Electronic Services like ILLiad or Reprints Desk
  • Includes EBSCO search results if you have set up the EBSCO API for searching

You can use either internal or external authentication for Primo, but the best user experience is to set up external authentication through your campus IT, so that users have a consistent login experience across all campus systems. If you allow community borrowers to use Primo for requests or borrowing management, you will probably need to set them up with internal authentication.  See How do I set up Authentication for Alma/Primo for more information.

Authentication Set-up

  • Go to Config>Discovery>Authentication>User Authentication

  • Choose the Authentication Profile that you want to use. These are set up under General>External Systems>Integration Profiles, except for the Alma profile, which is for internal users and good to activate for testing purposes or community borrowers
  • If you want to add a link to more information about the login, use one of the Login Page Help Links
  • Check the Enable Silent Login if you use an authentication system where it can automatically log you in if you're already logged into the same system in another browser tab or session. There's a known issue where Silent Login doesn't work with SAML Azure (1/31/24).
  • Click on the Login Labels tab to adjust the labels for your login options:
