The subcommittee on Collection Development recommends the following best practices:
Address DEI in collection development statements and policies
Create measurable goals and outcomes for decolonization, accessibility and inclusion of DEI resources
Create directives to achieve goals and outcomes that are explicit and actionable
Create processes, guidelines, or rubrics to assess the success of directives
Analyze for DEI and accessibility gaps in physical and electronic resource collections
Purposefully acquire works created by authors of diverse backgrounds, including BIPOC, women and gender minorities and diverse publishers
Purposefully acquire works reflecting the student body or the general population in the region where the college is located.
Review and revise policies every 3-5 years - may be a part of institutional review requirements for the library
Highlight DEI resources within the collection through outreach, library's website, and displays
Coordinate with faculty to understand how they are incorporating diverse materials into their courses
Allocate funding specifically for increasing diversity of collections
Adjust de-selection criteria to account for potentially lower circulation of DEI resources
